Our Mission:
Provide community television training and support to residents of the Town of Sharon.
Our History:
In 1982, the Federal Communications Commission established mandatory cable access programming provisions requiring all cable television systems to provide free access channels for public, educational and governmental use. These regulations led to the inclusion of provisions in the original cable television license for payment of 5% of the gross revenues from cable television to support community television in Sharon.
Sharon Community Television, Inc. (SCTV) was established to oversee the public access studio and equipment, and the expenditure of funding. SCTV is a private, non-profit corporation, independent of the cable television company and the town government. A 12 member Board of Directors, elected by the cable television subscribers, is responsible for the rules and policies governing use of the studio equipment. Day to day management is carried out by the Station Manager, who works closely with the Board of Directors and SCTV staff to promote and facilitate community television.
Since 1985, SCTV has covered a wide range of community events, school plays and concerts, sporting events and government meetings, giving residents access to a wide spectrum of life in Sharon. Community television in Sharon has evolved into a major source of information for residents – we are informative, entertaining, and now a vital link in the communication network of our town. |
